happy birthday dad
When you look for a roommate you think long and hard about who you could put up with every day. Who you feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with, cooking meals with, retrieving shredded spinnakers at 3 am with, etc.
Never thought my next roommate would be my father, Chris, on a 70ft fibreglass torpedo.
It’s his 61st birthday today -Happy Birthday Dad! Woo
Here are some things I've learned about you after seven weeks at sea together.
1. You can rock a beard, sorry Mom. It fits the offshore rugged sailor description. Except yours is white with wisdom :)
2. You work incessantly. Even when you don’t need to. You scrub the floorboards and make Evan do it with you. Thank you guys, and sorry Evan.
3. You still snore. And soundproof headphones don’t do the job.
4. You lose everything just like me. You’d think our stuff couldn't go far, the boat is only so big. But I swear someone is messing with us. Or maybe it’s just our A.D.D. (Going w latter).
5. You’re super competitive. I open a Snickers bar, you have to have one too. Mike reaches speeds of 22 knots, you go and hit 23. Your determination is contagious.
6. Lastly, you are one kick a$$ sailor. Don’t worry, I believed you before, but to see you in action is inspiring.
Sailing has always been a huge part of your life. You once made a career out of something you love to do. But as your responsibilities piled up, you hung up the helm and swapped changing kites for diapers. You took on a corporate career to support your family, making time for occasional racing when you could. But look at you now… Did you ever think you would one day be celebrating your 61st birthday racing halfway around the world with one of your daughters and 8500 nautical miles under your belt, so far. I think this officially awards me Favourite Child status. Sorry Emma and Lauren. Don’t worry, I’m sure he will convince you guys to join him on some other insane adventure, although this didn't take much convincing at all. This achievement wasn’t the whole point for doing this. It was the journey, the experience, the story I get to write with you. We are making memories that will last a a lifetime.
Enough now, time to get back to sailing 🩵💙
